More About The Speaker

Dr. Fonken is Director of Counseling and Wellness Programs for the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (CVMBS) at Colorado State University where she provides support and counseling services to students, interns, and residents and oversees the wellness curriculum for the college. In addition she leads the CVMBS Health and Wellbeing Task Force, assists in coordination the Veterinary Orientation for incoming veterinary students, directs and teaches the Healer’s Art Course, a discovery model course in values clarification and professionalism, and teaches in the Veterinary Medicine Foundations courses.

Dr. Fonken is a licensed psychotherapist, and holds a Ph.D. in Counselor Education from Colorado State University and a Master’s Degree in Agency Counseling from the University of Northern Colorado. Over the last 30 years she has worked in private practice, clinical hospital settings, and non-profit, governmental and educational settings.

She is currently a member of The Veterinary Mental Health Professionals group, the AAVMC Veterinary Wellness Action Group and is a past member of the AVMA Wellness Roundtable. She has been involved in the planning and implementation of the annual AAVMC Veterinary Health and Wellness Summits for veterinary colleges, students and practitioners. Most recently she has enjoyed traveling the country offering presentations and workshops to veterinary professionals in the area of strengthening wellbeing through the practice of healthy resilience and compassion satisfaction.

A native of Colorado she spends her free time out in nature, trail running, hiking, skiing and enjoying outdoor adventures with her two sons.
