Fluid therapy is essential in the management of many small animal diseases, including surgical, medical and emergency conditions. This course will review the essentials you should know about fluid therapy – from fluid dynamics, to creating and monitoring a fluid therapy plan for your patient! That’s not all! We’ll also look at shock, transfusion therapy and fluid therapy in different disease states including gastrointestinal disease, renal failure, heart disease, cesarean and more!

What's in the Course?

Week 1: All About Fluids!
Our patients are approximately 60-70% water! However, not all of the water is in the one place – we have fluid compartments, such as blood, interstitial fluid, and intracellular fluid compartments. Learn the characteristics of these compartments, how the body maintains control of them, and how we can use them to make our fluid therapy more efficient and rewarding! What’s more, we’ll discuss the different fluids available to manage fluid and electrolyte disturbances in our patients, we’ll review the use of synthetic colloids, and discover why fluid therapy is more than just hanging a bag of lactated Ringer’s above the patient!
Week 2: Shock
Shock is one of the most common conditions we see in emergency patients – and there are many types of shock too – from hypovolaemic shock, to distributive shock, septic shock and cardiogenic shock among others. This week is dedicated to learning about the pathophysiology of the different types of shock, and how to effectively treat them. We’ll even look at what to do when our patient doesn’t respond to our treatment!
Week 3: Transfusion Therapy

This week is all about transfusions! Learn the essentials of transfusion medicine, from blood typing and cross-matching to blood product delivery and monitoring. Know when patients need a transfusion, know how to calculate transfusion blood volumes, how to collect blood from donor dogs and cats safely, and what to do when a transfusion reaction occurs!

Week 4: The Fluid Therapy Plan

The fluid therapy plan encompasses everything from diagnosing and treating shock, to rehydrating the patient and managing their underlying disease. Without a fluid therapy plan, we could end up giving our patient a fluid that is the wrong type, at the wrong rate, or even make our sick patient even more sick. This week we will look at how we can develop a simple and effective fluid plan for every patient we see in hospital, using real cases, such as parvovirus enteritis!
