About the Online Toxicology Symposium 2024

What Is it – March is Poison Prevention Awareness Month and the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) and VetEducation, have teamed up to bring to you three live and interactive webinars. In these live sessions, renowned speakers from the APCC will explore how you can identify, prevent, and treat various toxins.

Summary: A review of current topics in veterinary literature related to toxicology. Discussions will include new information on grape toxicity, potential risks of intralipid treatment and more!

Summary: In this webinar we will discuss some of the unique aspects of different toxins and toxicoses, as well as practical tidbits of information in the management of canine and feline toxin exposures.

Decontamination: Things We Have Learned

Speaker: Dr Jennifer Hopkins

Summary: This lecture will focus on methods of decontamination, one of the most important first steps to consider in the treatment of toxicity. Indications and methods for oral, ocular, and dermal decontamination will be discussed with varying species considered. Contraindications and complications with common decontamination methods will be covered. Additionally, less common forms of decontamination, such as intralipid therapy and extracorporeal elimination, will be touched on.

Summary: Second Chance Dogs” tells the story of one facility dedicated to giving abused and neglected animals another chance. Through innovative techniques, patience, and complete commitment, the staff at the ASPCA Behavioral Rehabilitation Center is moving these animals — once considered hopeless cases — from rescue to rehabilitation, and ultimately into safe and loving homes.

Karla Smith, DVM

Dr. Karla Smith is a Consulting Veterinarian in Clinical Toxicology. She is originally from Arizona. She graduated from Colorado State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2000. After veterinary school Dr. Smith worked in small animal practice (general medicine and emergency) until 2004, when she moved to Illinois to work at the Animal Poison Control Center. She is involved with Greyhound rescue and has been breeding Borzoi since 2011. She is active in many dog sports, including lure coursing, obedience and the new sport of canine nose work.

Nicole Dockrey, DVM

Dr. Dockrey is a 1999 graduate of Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine, and is currently a consulting veterinarian in clinical toxicology with the ASPCA Animal Poison Control. Her clinical experience includes general and emergency practice, with a special interest in critical care medicine. She has also developed and taught courses in tactical veterinary medicine and held leadership positions with local veterinary medical associations. She takes a progressive and practical approach to veterinary medicine.

Jennifer Hopkins, DVM

Dr. Jennifer Hopkins has been a consulting veterinarian at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center since January 2021, and is also a supervisor on the hotline. Prior to joining the ASPCA, she worked in food animal welfare and regulation with the State of Iowa Department of Agriculture, and was in clinical practice in Chicago, IL. She obtained her veterinary degree from Cornell University. She is passionate about helping poisoned pets.
