Summary

The prevalence of obesity in cats has increased in recent years to 30-40%, and as in humans and other species, obesity is considered a risk factor for diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, some types of cancer, chronic inflammation, and shortened life span. In this lecture, Dr. Okada will discuss how to correctly diagnose overweightedness and obesity in feline patients. Weight management plans consisting of energy requirement calculation, monitoring, and adjustment will be discussed. Diet recommendations that address common challenges will also be covered.

BA, DVM, PhD, ACVIM (Nutrition) Resident

Dr. Okada completed her BA at UC Berkeley and her DVM at Michigan State University. In 2017, she obtained PhD in Veterinary Biochemistry at Nippon Veterinary and Life Science University while holding a faculty position as an assistant professor. She is currently completing an American College of Veterinary Nutrition residency that is jointly supported by VNSS and Balance IT®. She has been practicing veterinary medicine in the San Francisco Bay Area since 2005.
