Summary

In this program, participants will learn about the definitions, causes and signs of canine atopy. A brief discussion of traditional atopy treatments will follow, including allergy testing and immunotherapy, systemic atopy medications, and topical treatments. The current and historical research into nutritional treatments for atopy will then be discussed, focusing mainly on fatty acids and palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), but also including a brief summary of probiotics, vitamins D and E, zinc, and hardy kiwi extract. The program will then discuss the available diets for atopic dogs.

Alexandra Gould

DVM, DACVD

Dr. Alexandra Gould, DVM, DACVD, graduated from Oberlin College with a BA in Biology and Biochemistry, and with honors from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. She completed a rotating small animal internship at VCA Newark Animal Hospital in Delaware, before beginning her residency training with Drs. Coyner and Trimmer in Lacey, WA and Las Vegas, NV.

During her residency, she completed an investigation of Staphylococcus species in pet grooming salons. Her special interests include the management of immune-mediated skin diseases and allergies in dogs and cats. Her favorite part of veterinary practice is helping to improve the lives of patients and clients by working to restore patients’ health and the human-animal bond.
