Monitoring and treatment of cardiac and respiratory function is crucial to patient survival. This week we’ll look at the monitoring tools of the respiratory tract, including how to reduce the risk of pneumonia in the critical patient, postural and physical therapy for respiratory illness, and oxygen therapy among others. We’ll also include a section on sampling and interpretation of blood gases as well! In addition, we’ll cover key aspects of monitoring the cardiovascular system, including blood pressure, blood lactate, as well as physical parameters of cardiovascular performance.In addition, we’ll provide you with a working guide to interpretation of abnormal heart rhythm (ECG analysis and interpretation), and a guide to identifying and treating various forms of cardiovascular shock in the critical patient.
Gastrointestinal dysfunction is common in critical illness, with symptoms ranging from inappetence to vomiting and diarrhoea. This week we will look at critical care of the gastrointestinal tract – including the appropriate use of medications to alter gut function in the critical patient, as well as the key role of nutritional support in improving patient outcome. We’ll provide information on appropriate nutrition, feeding tubes, and feeding protocols for various critical illnesses as well!
From surgical wounds to traumatic wounds, and even catheter sites, wound management is crucial to patient wellbeing and survival in the critical patient. This week we’ll look at how to appropriately manage hospitalised patients with wounds – from correct tissue handling and cleaning, to selecting the right bandage for your patient to ensure optimum outcome. We’ll also give you some handy guides to bandages and ointments to help you select the right tools for your patient’s wounds!
Whether your patient is recovering from trauma, or being treated for a serious medical condition, chances are they will require intravenous fluid therapy. This week we’ll talk about fluid therapy for shock, maintenance, and surgery. We’ll also discuss the role of transfusion therapy in the critical patient as well.

Following his residency, Philip worked for nearly 6 years at the Animal Emergency Centre in Melbourne, becoming the Senior Veterinarian at the centre in 2004. In 2006, Philip undertook a 1-year surgical externship before moving to Townsville to take up the position of Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care at JCU. Philip is also co-founder, and director of Vet Education Pty Ltd (www.veteducation.com) – one of Australia’s leading providers of online continuing education for veterinarians and veterinary nurses.
Philip has published numerous manuals and guides concerning emergency medicine, including a CRI manual, haematology and biochemistry interpretation guide, emergency anaesthesia guide, and a ventilation therapy manual for small animals, in addition to being published in peer reviewed literature.
Philip’s key interests in veterinary science include respiratory emergencies, ventilation therapy, envenomations and toxicology.
