Course Description

Anaesthesia is something we do every day in general practice. But it is a potentially lethal procedure! So, how can we make our anaesthesia safe? This 5-week interactive course will provide you with essential tools to make your patient anaesthesia as safe and effective as possible. We will discuss anaesthetic drugs, safe administration, anaesthetic circuit selection, essential anaesthetic monitoring, and what to do in case of the emergency anaesthetic!

What's in the Course?

This topic covers a plan for identification of anaesthetic risk factors in canine and feline patients and outlines specific therapeutic modalities for the correction or reduction in anaesthetic risk, for disorders of the respiratory system, cardiovascular system, urinary and neurological system. You will also receive client history forms, anaesthetic risk assessment charts and many more great resources for your practice!
This topic covers the essential pharmacology of the most commonly used analgesic and anaesthetic drugs used in small animal anaesthesia – from opioids, ketamine and sedatives, to inhalant anaesthetic drugs and alpha-2 agonists and more. More than just covering a list of drugs, you will also receive suggested drug protocols for various diseases, and some useful infusion guides for continuous drug infusions too!
This topic covers monitoring of the anaesthetic patient – from basic measurement of physical parameters to instrumentation and interpretation of pulse oximetry, end-tidal carbon dioxide concentration, blood pressure and urine output. Additionally, a review of anaesthetic depth and how this relates to physiological responsiveness of the patient is also detailed.
Anaesthetic complications vary from temporary periods of apnoea following anaesthetic induction, through to life-threatening disorders of circulation, respiratory function and anaesthetic death. This topic explores the causes of the most common anaesthetic emergencies, and presents a logical algorithm for solving each detected problem.
This topic covers an approach to problem identification and anaesthetic management of patients with specific diseases, including respiratory diseases, cardiac disease, caesarean section, kidney failure, liver disease and much more!

Philip graduated from Massey University in New Zealand in 1992, and spent 7 years in small animal practice before undertaking a residency in veterinary emergency and critical care at the University of Melbourne in 1998. Following his residency, Philip worked for nearly 6 years at the Animal Emergency Centre in Melbourne, becoming the Senior Veterinarian at the centre in 2004. In 2006, Philip undertook a 1-year surgical externship before moving to Townsville to take up the position of Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care at JCU. Philip is also co-founder, and director of Vet Education Pty Ltd (www.veteducation.com.au) – one of Australia’s leading providers of online continuing education for veterinarians and veterinary nurses. Philip has published numerous manuals and guides concerning emergency medicine, and is a published author in snake envenomation in peer reviewed literature. Philip is also a founding scientific advisory committee member of SnakeMap, a project designed to improve our understanding of snake envenomation in dogs and cats in Australia Philips key interests in veterinary science include respiratory emergencies, ventilation therapy, emergency management of the trauma patient, emergency surgery and envenomations and toxicology.
