In this program, we will discuss loss of patients (through unexpected death and euthanasia), the feelings that arise from these situations, and how to deal with them. Death of patients is inevitable in the veterinary profession. Therefore, training in how to come back from that loss is essential. We are expected to help clients through losing their pet, but we are often suffering as well. The perfectionist tendencies that run through the veterinary profession make accepting and processing death even harder. We tend to beat ourselves up reliving the trauma rather than giving ourselves grace and room to grieve. Learning to move through patient loss is one of the most important skills a veterinary professional can learn.

When is it?

Cherie T. Buisson

DVM, CHPV Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Veterinarian Certified Low Stress Handling (TM) Silver Certified QPR Suicide Prevention

Dr. Buisson wasn’t (and isn’t!) always A Happy Vet. In fact, for many years, she was An Unhappy Vet. Despite working in wonderful practices with compassionate mentors, she always felt she didn’t fit in. She found private practice draining and felt like a failure for her inability to be “a real vet”. She learned the hard way for two decades, and her mission is to provide veterinary professionals with the tools to find their happiness and to help them be comfortable if they take a nontraditional approach. She believes it’s never too late to find your place, but there’s nothing wrong with starting early!
