Whether you think they’re creepy or cool, parasites are a daily occurrence in the veterinary field so it’s important to be able to collect, identify, and treat them and here’s why:
In this session, attendees will learn the fundamentals necessary for diagnosis, identification, and management of common canine ectoparasites including but not limited to mange (sarcoptes and demodicosis), fleas, ticks, lice, and ear mites. Attendees will also learn the fundamentals of common dermatology diagnostic techniques including skin scrapes, tape preps, and cytology necessary for identification and diagnosis of these parasites.
Licensed Veterinary Technician, Founder and Creator of the Small Animal Surgery Day
Since 2001, when becoming a licensed veterinary technician, Sandy has traveled through the U.S. to work with a variety of animals including monk seals in Hawaii, gorillas in Texas, marine mammals and birds in Alaska. She also shares a passion for such animals as rabbits, rodents, exotics, reptiles, large animals and of course dogs and cats.
1n 2008 Sandy started teaching at Foothill College, Los Altos Hills, CA, in the Veterinary Technology Program. She has been the advisor for the Student Chapter of NAVTA since 2011 and was awarded Advisor of the Year in 2012. Sandy was awarded California Veterinary Technician of the Year in 2014 and the Linda Markland Outstanding Veterinary Technician in 2021, nominated by the California Veterinary Medical Association.
Sandy is Vice President for the Academy of Physical Rehabilitation Veterinary Technicians, current committee member for SCNAVTA under NAVTA and the Liaison for the Committee on Veterinary Technician Specialties.
Certifications include Veterinary Technician Specialist in Physical Rehabilitation, recognized academy and accepted by NAVTA and through the Canine Rehab Institute in canine rehabilitation.
She has an extensive background in human nutrition and sports medicine from her master’s degree with emphasis in exercise science which she has easily transferred to the animal world.
She has served as Secretary for California RVT Association (CaRVTA), NAVTA State Association Representative and IACUC committee member for Foothill College.
She is the founder and creator of the Small Animal Surgery Day. This is an event that invites local veterinarians, Foothill College alumni and students to help spay and neuter small animals from local rescue groups. Since that time there has been over 550 small animals altered and thus more adoptable and healthier. Because of this collaboration and enriching educational event, Sandy was honored with the CVMA outstanding Vet Tech of the Year.
Sandy has become an active conference lecturer on animal physical rehabilitation and wellness topics. In her 4tth career now, she has found a way that everything ties together and where her passion makes a difference.

Born in Charlotte, NC and raised in NC, FL and Wisconsin. After high school in Wisconsin I headed south and attended Auburn University. After graduation and a short time at the Veterinary School pursuing my Master’s degree in Reproductive Endocrinology, I sold veterinary pharmaceuticals for E.R. Squibb and Sons for 3 years prior to entering Veterinary Medical School. After receiving my Veterinary degree I founded and maintained an AAHA general practice in Lake Mary, Florida for 24 years. After achieving Board Certification in Veterinary Dermatology I moved to San Antonio, Texas as the Director of South Texas Veterinary Allergy and Dermatology within the South Texas Veterinary Specialists for 4 ½ years. Upon returning to Florida I joined Animal Dermatology South and I was the Director of our office in Saint Petersburg, Florida. Currently I am working at Animal Dermatology Clinic - Bradenton in Bradenton, Florida. I am still volunteering my services to all military working dogs, consulting on cases worldwide and I still spend time bimonthly (when possible) on Lackland Airforce Base at the Daniel E. Holland Specialty Referral Hospital for military working animals. Having spent time as a territory manager for a large pharmaceutical company; owned and operated a companion animal practice for over 20 years; and now as a Board Certified Veterinary Dermatologist; I believe that I have a unique perspective on benefits that pharmaceutical representatives bring to the general and specialty veterinary practitioners. Speaking and teaching others about Veterinary Dermatology is a passion of mine and I have been privileged to have been invited to speak/teach across the United States and abroad. Interacting with veterinarians, and technicians at their practices, in small groups or in large meetings are all things that I enjoy.
