Summary

In this program, participants will learn about blindness and visual impairment and the role of the guide dog industry. Participants will then learn what is involved in breeding, raising and training a guide dog to ultimately be successfully matched with a blind or visually impaired individual. This program will also discuss the important role veterinarians play in creating a successful veterinary/client experience to play a part in supporting the guide dog team’s longevity.

Chief Veterinary Officer at Guiding Eyes for the Blind

Dr. Brenninkmeyer has been associated with Guiding Eyes since the 1990s when she helped to raise a puppy. She subsequently came to Guiding Eyes for a veterinary externship, and then returned to accept a position as Assistant Director of Veterinary Services. After a pause to raise her three young children, Dr. B was warmly welcomed back to the organization.

As Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr B is responsible for overseeing all the veterinary operations including the management of two on-site veterinary hospitals and the health of all dogs in the kennels. Additionally, Dr Brenninkmeyer and her team consult with raisers, breeding fosters, specialists, regional veterinarians and guide dog handlers on a daily basis to coordinate and provide exceptional care for all Guiding Eyes’ Dogs.

Dr B and her husband, Gerald, live in Somers and are parents to Ben, Owen and Mae as well as dog parents to Hank the Boxer.
