Summary

Biosecurity refers to measures aimed at preventing the spread of pathogens to minimize the risk of infectious disease. As veterinarians, we are very good at preventing infection via vaccination, diagnosing infection, and treating infectious disease. However, we may spend less time thinking about the other ways that we can reduce the risk of infectious disease transmission in our clinics and hospitals. Exactly because our clinics and hospitals are the places that animals with infectious diseases are most likely to congregate, and because many of the sick animals with non-infectious diseases that also congregate in those same clinics and hospitals are immunocompromised, we must be always conscious of infection control, prevention, and biosecurity (ICPB) measures to protect our patients. Further, because many animal pathogens are zoonotic, these ICPB measures can protect our clients, our staff, and ourselves. This presentation will discuss some of the principles of ICPB considering various routes of pathogen transmission and using some of the more relevant specific pathogens as examples.

Leah A. Cohn

DVM, PhD, DACVIM

Dr. Cohn earned her DVM at the University of Tennessee, followed by internship, residency, and PhD at North Carolina State University. She is a diplomate of the American College of Internal Medicine with specialization in Small Animal Internal Medicine. Dr. Cohn is a Professor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri, where she has been on faculty for more than 25 years. Dr. Cohn enjoys all aspects of internal medicine, but has a special interest in infectious and respiratory disease. She is the co-editor of Cote's Clinical Veterinary Advisor, and has authored well over 125 peer reviewed scientific publications. Currently, she is serving as the Interim Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs at the University of Missouri.
