Summary

As anesthetists, we administer a variety of drugs that are designed to depress our patients’ central nervous systems and provide analgesia, muscle relaxation, amnesia, and immobilization so advanced surgical and medical procedures can be performed. The multitude of combinations of anesthetic agents and adjuncts that provide these beneficial effects can also result in significant changes to a patient’s hemodynamic stability, especially if that patient is compromised due to trauma, shock, or advanced concurrent disease. A veterinary anesthetist must be trained to quickly anticipate, recognize, and assess the physiologic consequences of any given anesthetic protocol on any given patient. Frequent monitoring that includes a combination of physical and electronic parameters is the cornerstone of providing anesthetic care in the safest way possible. This lecture provides an overview of a variety of assessments that the anesthetist should include for every patient.
