Surgical emergencies of the abdomen are frequently encountered in the dog and cat. Diseases including GDV, intestinal foreign body, intussusception and peritonitis head the list of some very serious diseases.
This 4-week course will provide current reviews on the diagnosis and surgical management of these important diseases, backed up by sound medical support, and anaesthesia/analgesia protocols – all required to ensure optimum patient outcome.
GDV is a condition in which our understanding of priorities during treatment has evolved a lot over the past 10 years or so. We will examine fluid resuscitation, analgesia, stabilisation and decision-making in surgery – including what to do with the engorged – but otherwise healthy-looking spleen! Also included is a look at post-operative monitoring, arrhythmia management and nutrition in the post-surgery period.
This week is focused on the diagnosis and management of the patient with intestinal obstruction. We’ll review radiographic and sonographic findings in intestinal obstruction, when to go to surgery, and emergency surgical technique – including serosal patching for severely compromised bowel, where resection may not be feasible.
Acute abdominal haemorrhage may result from coagulopathy, bleeding abdominal viscera or vascular disease, among other conditions. This week we will explore acute abdominal haemorrhage, reviewing aetiology, recommended diagnostic tests, the decision to take the patient to surgery, and stabilisation and anaesthetic techniques to optimise patient chance of recovery.
Peritonitis can result from bowel rupture, biliary tract rupture, urinary tract rupture, or penetrating abdominal injury. This week, we’ll discuss the diagnosis and management of peritonitis, including the use of ultrasound, cytology and biochemistry as diagnostic tools, and the role of surgery in facilitating resolution to the underlying cause. We’ll also detail the systemic inflammatory response to severe peritonitis, and how to manage this as well!
The 4-week course starts on August 30, 2021 with live tutorials by Dr Philip Judge on Mondays at 19:30 AEST.
